However, this is not the only incident of miscreants harassing people indulging in New Year’s Eve revelry on the streets of Bengaluru. The city has been in the news due to several complaints of molestation on New Year’s Eve when mobs of unruly men had molested women on MG Road and Brigade Road, which is a popular haunt where thousands of people celebrate new year’s eve every year.
Earlier too, reports of miscreants groping women who had gathered to celebrate on 31 December in the central Bengaluru areas of MG Road, Brigade Road and Church Street, surfaced.
The minister, although, acknowledged these incident as he said “these kind of things do happen”, his comments fueled another controversy as he appeared to have blamed the incident on “western clothes” and “western mindset”.
He blamed the women for partying at night in the streets and for behaving “almost like foreigners”. “They tried to copy the Westerners, not only in their mindset but even in their dressing,” he said, adding, “(On) events like new year’s, there are women who are harassed or treated badly,” he said.
