Gold worth Rs 30 lakh seized at Bhubaneswar airport

BHUBANESWAR: Gold worth Rs 30 lakh was seized at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) on Tuesday by the Directorate General of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). Two arrests have been made.

Sources said, the sleuths swooped down on the suspects on the basis of a specific tip-off, which said gold was being smuggled to Bhubaneswar.

The DRI officers intercepted two passengers who arrived here on Air Asia flight AK-31, which reached the airport at 11:25 pm.

On a thorough search, six pieces of gold, weighing 661 grams were recovered from a passenger who arrived from Bangkok. The man is a native of Maharashtra’s Kolhapur.

Another person, a native of Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur arrived from Singapore via Kuala Lumpur and was found carrying 400 grams of gold cut into pieces, Additional Director General of DRI (Hyderabad Zonal Unit), MK Singh said.

“Both of them had concealed the contraband in their rectum. The contraband has been seized under the Customs Act of 1962,” Singh added.
