India bag seven medals at Asian Athletics Championships in Odisha capital on Day 1

Bhubaneswar: Indian athletes were off to a flying start on the opening day of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships held in Odisha capital today.

The host nation bagged six medals including two gold at the athletic meet held at Kalinga Stadium here.

Defending champion Vikash Gowda opened the account for India by winning bronze in discus throw followed by Manpreet Kaur who won gold in women’s shot put. Manpreet dominated her event with a best throw of 18.28 metres to register the first gold for India in the event.

Similarly, Annu Rani won bronze medal in women’s javelin throw event. Besides, Neena V and Nayana James bagged silver and bronze medals respectively in women’s long jump.

This apart, G Lakshmanan won second gold medal for India in men’s 5000 meter race and Sanjeevani Jadhav won bronze in 5000 meter in women’s category tally to medal tally to seven.
