HYDERABAD: Special Investigation Team (SIT) sleuths of Hyderabad arrested a 22-year-old ISIS sympathiser, who embraced Islam three years ago, for attempting to carry out subversive activities.
The accused, Konakalla Subramanyam alias Omer, 22, is a native of Challapally in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. Omer has been staying at Tolichowki in Hyderabad, selling lemon soda for past two years.
Counter Intelligence sleuths of Telangana noticed Omer exchanging messages with ISIS sympathisers across the globe and put him under surveillance. Police tracked a PDF file sent to Omer by his Mumbai-based handler, Abu Qahafa Al-Hindi alias Dr Khalid, explaining how to make a petrol bomb, Molotov Cocktail. “Molotov Cocktail is also called the poor man’s grenade. Abu Qahafa Al Hindi instructed Omer to manufacture the bombs and keep in touch with fellow ISIS sympathisers across the globe to carry out terror attacks at an appropriate time,” an investigating official said.
When Omer said agreed to take orders from Al Hindi, SIT sleuths tracked the conversation and arrested him from Sophia Residency apartment in Paramount Colony, Tolichowki, on Friday morning. Police seized a mobile phone, which contained incriminating conversation with ISIS sympathizers.
Based on the complaint lodged by SIT, a case was registered against Omer under sections 120(B), 121-A, 124-A of the IPC and sections 10 & 13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
During interrogation, Omer said he embraced Islam in 2014 while pursuing intermediate course at a corporate college in Machilipatnam. Omer told police his friends in college gave him Islamic books translated in Telugu — Srushti Ni Kaadu Srushtikartanu Poojincu and O Manishi Nee Srushtikartanu Gurtinchu. “Subramanyam also read about the life of Prophet Muhammed and then converted to Islam,” a CCS official said.
Omer then attended jamats organised in Machilipatnam and then went to Siddapur in Gujarat for 30 days to learn Arabic and Quran recital. By this time, Omer began actively chatting with various ISIS sympathysers on Facebook, Instagram and Telegram. Omer later went to Ambur and Oomrabad in Tamil Nadu for three days to meet ISIS sympathisers.
Subsequently, he came to Hyderabad in 2015. He met one Special Investigation Team of Bahadurpura, who provided him with accommodation. Later, he met Abdul Khadir Jilani, a homoeopathy practitioner from Himayathnagar for accommodation and befriended a watch repairer, Wasim of Nampally. Omer would attend Jamat with friends in Hyderabad and even went to Srinagar in 2016 to meet a Facebook friend, Mohammed Amir, associated with Islamic Global School.
He worked for three months as an accountant at the school before returning to Hyderabad in November 2016.
After returning from Srinagar, Omer met his handler, Abu Qahafa Al Hindi alias Dr Khaled at a lodge in Jamia Mohallah for four days in November 2016. Abu is a tall man in his mid-twenties, who asked him to be in touch with ISIS sympathysers from across the globe, Omer told interrogators.
