Nehru Nagar police on Saturday slapped molestation charges against a person who slapped a minor, a video of which went viral on Friday, showing the girl fainting after receiving the blow. The incident took place on Tuesday. Police had earlier only filed assault charges against the accused, after which he was released on bail.
On Saturday, the family of the victim demanded that molestation charges also be slapped on the accused.
According to police, the incident took place on Tuesday evening at Nehru Nagar in Kurla when the girl was going for tuition class at around 7 pm. The accused, Imran Shaikh, along with his friends, were sitting in an auto rickshaw. “Shaikh and his friends were talking loudly and passing comments. When the girl crossed them, Shaikh passed a comment that made her turn back and tell him to behave properly,” said a police officer from Nehru Nagar police station.
In response, Shaikh, now furious, and started to thrash her. The girl resisted and tried to free herself from his clutches. Meanwhile, Shaikh pulled out a sharp object and hit the girl on her nose. The girl’s nose started bleeding and she fainted on the road. After the incident, when there was chaos, relatives of the girl, who live nearby ,came to the spot. Seeing the girl lying fainted, they rushed her to Rajawadi hospital.
“After the treatment, they approached Nehru Nagar police station to lodge a complaint. We had arrested the accused the same day and had charged him under relevant sections for assault as per the statement given by her. As the sections were bailable, he was released on bail on Friday,” said a police officer.
However, the family of the victim alleged that the police initially did not register the FIR and did not slap molestation charges they demanded. “The Shaikh’s family members threatened my family and asked us to withdraw the complaint. They demanded that my daughter change the statement. Today they have taken the statement again and have added the section,” said victim’s father.
“My daughter has sustained a serious injury on her nose, and the nasal bone has been fractured. Doctors has advised us to go in for surgery,” he added. “We have added sections for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons under the IPC according to the supplementary statement of the victim. We have arrested the accused and our probe is on,” Shahaji Umap, Deputy Commissioner of Police(zone 6).
In another incident, a married woman was attacked by a jilted lover in Vikhroli on Saturday, with sharp object. The accused has been arrested by Parksite police and the woman is recuperating in Rajawadi hospital.
