Niali: Two more sheep killed, man injured in attack

Niali: Panic in the area continues with the death of two more sheep late last night at Baharana village here in Cuttack district even as the forest officials are taking all measures to trace the killer.

In the attack of the suspected ‘mysterious’ a man along with two other sheep also got injured.

As per reports, a pack of four wolves entered the village late last night and attacked the sheep killing two and injuring two other.

Besides, a resident of Majhikhanda village was also reportedly attacked by the wolves near Niali chhak.

“An animal, which was looking like a dog, tried to drag me holding my leg in its jaws. I started shouting and as people gathered, it ran away into the forest,” said the injured villager Taslim Uddin.

Pug marks like those of wolves have been spotted near the sheds of the sheep, said a forest official.

Earlier on Thursday, one lamb was found dead in similar style at Gobindapada village in the district following which the villagers staged a road blockade on Niali-Phulnakhara road with the dead animal demanding compensation.

Later, Forest and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray expressed resentment over the deaths and directed the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) to take immediate action for tracing out the killer.

Meanwhile, the forest department has expedited night patrolling in the villages under the Niali block with the help of local residents. Loud crackres were also burst to scare away the animals. However, installation of CCTV cameras and laying of traps have not yet been done in the vulnerable areas.
